About SAFE

SAFECenterThe SAFE Center is an online resource developed by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) and the eSchoolNews Network (eSN), with contributions from other relevant education organizations and solution providers. The SAFE Center is for educators and education officials responsible for safeguarding the students, staff, and infrastructure of K-20 education.

Educators today need a comprehensive, interactive resource they can turn to in advance of emergencies. They need an online resource center and clearinghouse to help them ensure that adequate security systems are in place and that their preparations for emergencies and disasters are as good as they can be.

Toward that end, eSN and ISTE® have joined forces to create this site, which includes the following components for educators:

  • A catalog of human-generated and natural disasters likely to threaten schools – from earthquakes and tornadoes to shooting incidents and child-abduction emergencies. This catalog is a work in progress.
  • An emergency-specific collection of the best available research documents and guidelines on how to prepare for and cope with each of type of disaster and emergency. This resource will grow as time goes on.
  • A clearinghouse of state and local education disaster plans educators can look to as models when developing or revising their own. (Certain details have been excised from these documents to ensure that posting them will not compromise safety or security.) This will grow over time.
  • A presentation of "best of breed" examples of planning documents covering key types of disasters and emergencies, as identified by the SAFE Center advisory panel.
  • Information from the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) on IT disaster recovery.
  • Guidelines and resources from major organizations such as the National Education Association (NEA) and the State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA).
  • A link library for relevant resources at government agencies, associations, and universities.
  • A link library and selected information on behalf of corporate security and preparedness providers.
